Multi-storey car park to close as upgrades commence

21 February 2013

Refurbishment works to the Garrick multi-storey car park that began last year with upgrades to the lifts are due to continue this spring.

The next phase will require more substantial work requiring complete closure of the car park for approximately 25 weeks commencing 11 March, 2013.

Councillor Graham Powell, cabinet member for education and infrastructure said, "Complete closure of the car park is necessary to allow these essential works to be carried out as quickly and as safely as possible.

“It is important that this work is done now, alongside the development of the old livestock market, so that it is completed for of the opening of the retail quarter. The refurbishment of the car park will complement that development and support the anticipated extra demand for car parking that a revitalised city centre will attract."

Current use of the multi-storey car park indicates that capacity in the remaining city centre car parks will be sufficient and the effect of the closure should be minimal. An additional temporary car park next to the existing Garrick surface car park will also be available in early spring.

Councillor Powell added, "I acknowledge that there may be some inconvenience during this period, for which I apologise, but I am confident that the end result will be worth it as this part of the city comes to life when the retail quarter opens in 2014".
